Inspired by the exhibition’s exploration of the ancient and enduring entanglement between textiles, people and our world, Toiletastic is a richly layered design that reflects humanity’s long relationship with cloth, craft and global exchange.
Digitally printed on matt paper, the pattern brings together silkworms, threads and delicate webs, la toile in French, interlaced with ropes that wind through exotic plants and subtle references to historic trade routes. At the heart of the composition sits the elephant, a commanding yet contemplative presence. Long associated with memory, strength and wisdom, the elephant becomes a symbolic guardian of textile history, a keeper of stories, skills and cultural knowledge carried across continents and generations.
As ever, Timorous Beasties revels in contrast, the ornamental and the subversive, the decorative and the deeply meaningful, offering a contemporary response to humanity’s oldest craft.
