Rising above St. Julian’s, Malta, Mercury Tower is a striking high-rise designed by the world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects. With its distinctive curves and dramatic twist at mid-level, the 32-storey landmark redefines the skyline and sets a bold stage for the interiors within. Tasked with designing short-let apartments inside the tower, Malta-based Studio NICHE approached the project with their signature flair for pattern, texture, and bespoke detail. The result is a series of immersive interiors that echo the energy of the building itself - urban, dynamic, and unforgettable.
Studio NICHE, led by Martina Fenech Adami, looked to the architecture and surrounding cityscape for inspiration, creating spaces that leave a lasting impact. Their design philosophy is rooted in the idea of stimulating the senses, pairing bold choices with bespoke details to transform everyday living spaces into striking experiences.
To achieve this, NICHE incorporated a curated selection of Timorous Beasties fabrics and wallpapers. Our Graffiti Velvet was used to upholster furniture, bringing a burst of colour and texture that resonates with the tower’s contemporary aesthetic. Meanwhile, our Kaleido Splatt All Over Wallpaper adds layers of rhythm and movement to the apartments, complementing both the dramatic forms of the building and NICHE’s daring design language.
The effect is at once urban and luxurious, echoing the spirit of a boutique hotel while retaining a personal, residential feel. These short-let apartments are more than functional, they are memorable environments, designed to spark curiosity and inspire.
Throughout Mercury Tower, the collaboration between NICHE and Timorous Beasties demonstrates how bold design can transform architectural spaces. From vibrant velvets to kaleidoscopic walls, the interiors balance edge with sophistication, creating a dialogue between architecture, design, and materiality
